Learning the names of the techniques is an important part of the jujitsu training. Hearing the name and definition of a technique can help people remember. Hear the name of the technique and try to remember what the technique is before the definition is said. Good for self-study outside the dojo.
This book was written by a western gentleman who gained acceptance into some Japanese Martial Arts dojos earlier this century. It describes the way it use to be, before WWII. The Danzan-Ryu curriculum of Jujitsu with Ate, Kappo and Segotzu closely follows the training described in this book. Makes you wonder if Professor H.S. Okazaki had read the book while he was creating Danzan-Ryu.
The people of the English speaking world who study the traditional Japanese martial arts are confronted with the challenge of learning the terminology of the Japanese martial arts. Conventional Japanese dictionaries supply words necessary for daily communication in society as a whole but unfortunately lack the technical words of the martial arts. The purpose of this dictionary is to provide the English reader with an accurate listing of the words and phrases of the Japanese martial arts, along with their appropriate Chinese characters, and the English translations from a martial arts point of view.Recommended for martial artists interested in language and history.

This book is for Danzan-Ryu scholars and practitioners. Contains the actual Esoteric Principles from the Kodenkan in both Japanese and English. These documents were awarded by Professor Henry Seishiro Okazaki to his students.This book contains copies of actual graduation scrolls (mokuroku) and Okugi certificates (kaidensho) of Kodenkan graduates. Each line is shown in four different formats:
- A copy of the original Japanese handwritten text
- A legible printed copy of the Japanese text
- The phonetic Japanese in "romaji" (English syllables)
- A direct translation into English

Many of the AJJF Hanbo list may be found in this book. Clear photographes and explanations make learning how to use a cane doable given that you have a good foundation in Yawara.

A well regarded text for military hand-to-hand combat. Many of the techniques that Col. Applegate describes may also be found in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu.
The common Mag-Lite carried by many patrolpersons is an invaluable tool for self protection. This book illumines the reader with the use of a flashlight as shield, bludgeon, lever arm, motivator and light source. The techniques are simple and easy to learn, don't require a great deal of special training and may be learned directly from the book.
A classic book by the person most responsible for introducing the yawara stick (Kubotan) to Americans. Covers that primary uses of the weapon with an emphasis on law enforcement. The usefulness of the Kubotan is greatly enhanced when the officer has a good foundation in Yawara.

Bernard Siegfried Albinus (1697 - 1770) et al. used cadavers as models in their creation of some of the first detailed internal human anatomy reproductions. This book reproduces 80 of his most remarkable engravings paired with labeled line drawings.An excellent book for the study of human anatomy because of the clear well delineated line drawings which enable us to see the details of the beautiful copper engravings.
One nice feature of the book is that some figures are represented with various layers of tissue exposed, first the nude model, then the outer layer of muscle, the next layer of muscle, the organs, down to the bare skeletons. Each layer has an anterior and a posterior view. Another feature is that each bone is taken individually, and the proportions, muscle attachments, and major connective tissue are shown for each in turn.
Highly recommended for everyone learning the parts of the human body. Suggest you pickup a set of crayons and get busy. Required reading/coloring for all the AJJF Danzan-Ryu Seifukujitsu Institute courses.
The is a well written overview of Chinese Medicine for westerners. Excellent graphic design and multiple presentation modes help with the understanding of the eastern wellness paradigm.

One of the first books written by a real yogi for the western reader. Swami Vishnu Devananda explains all aspects of yoga from breathing, diet and exercise to relaxation and meditation.
This is the yoga book that Prof. Bud Estes recommended so highly. It was discovered by Tom Ball who showed it to Gene Edwards who showed it to Prof. Estes.The Doctrine and Practice of Yoga is a very dense insightful book. It is full of exercises for the reader that will develop the mind, body and spirit. Written in English without reliance upon too many Sanskrit terms.

This new book receives our recommendation as the must have book on yoga. Intermediate and advanced students can learn a great deal about the practice of yoga by comparing and contrasting the therapeutic routines illustrated for specific illnesses. Also a great way to vary your practice by following the sequences documented in the book.
Jess Stearn tells a fascinating story about how he learned yoga. A great read for anyone interested in first person literature. By the time you are half way through the book you will be inspired to study and practice this wonderful body/mind/spirit system called yoga.
