Sharon and Jaya's Wedding ― Music

There are two things that Sharon wanted above all else at our wedding; wonderful live music, and all of our friends there, having a great time.

Ceremony Music

Phil Gelb
The wedding ceremory music will be provided by our friends/teachers. As it happens all the musicians playing for the ceremony were at Lark Camp with us this past summer.

We met Phil Gelb at Lark (see Jaya's notes) this year. Phil is an outstanding Shakuhachi player and experimental/improvisational musician.

We suggest you go to his web site www.philipgelb.com to check his concert schedule and treat yourself to some music out of the ordinary.

Phil will be performing a traditional Buddhist meditation composition. During this time we will sit.

Pangur Ban

Michael Mullen
Michael
Pangur Ban is made up of Michael Mullen on fiddle, Tom Wagner of Oak, Ash and Thorn on guitar, with special guest Tim Hart on whistles. Tim also taught at Lark Camp (see Jaya's notes) this summer. Oak, Ash and Thorn

Reception Music

Irish Music Session

Celtic musicians often have informal gatherings to play traditional tunes. This sort of informal gathering, held in pub or at a party, is traditionally called a "seisiún" (pronounced like "session") in Irish. The music is typically fast dance music, such as jigs and reels. Sharon and Jaya are active members of both East Bay Slow Players (EBSP) and Berkeley Area Sunday Session (BASS). One of the things we share together is our music. We invite all of our friends to participate.

After hearing the music at our wedding you may want to join a session or simply come to listen. You are more than welcome to join us at our monthly Irish music slow session, on the forth Saturday of each month.

Expected to appear:

Note There is no longer a piano in the dojo. (The baby grand paid for our trip to Ireland.)

Reception Dancing ― Janet Lenore Band

Janet Lenore Band; Topher, Janet, Jeff Janet Lenore solo album
Music by the Janet Lenore Band ranges from growly blues, to good old rock'n'roll to folksy originals.

Lead vocalist Janet Lenore has written most of the original songs the band performs and she plays rhythm guitar and mandolin. The band is also performing some new compositions by lead guitar player Topher Gayle, who also sings and plays mandolin and hand drums. Bassist Jeff Davis rounds out the "Janet Lenore Band" sound. Over the past couple of years working together, the "Janet Lenore Band" has appeared at the Berkeley Free Folk Festival, the Palo Alto Art and Wine Festival, and at the Espresso Garden in San Jose. Janet was the former vocalist for the Brazilian jazz combo, "Pirahna," and she and Jeff currently back thereminist Charlie Read. Topher is the bass player for the bluegrass band "Briarwood" and he plays mandolin/mandola for "Coyote Blue." Jeff also plays bass for the rock band "Rhetoric." Janet's solo CD, Ladies of My Family is available through www.cdbaby.com/janetlenore.

The Waybacks [Cancelled]

Sharon and Stevie Coyle go way back, all the way to high school in Salinas. Unfortunately Stevie and his band will be unable to attend the wedding due to a previous engagement.

The Austin Lounge Lizards [Declined]
Conrad Deisler Sharon, Jaya and members of the Janet Lenore Band attended a concert by the Austin Lounge Lizards at the Freight & Salvage club in Berkeley on Sunday, October 12, 2003. At intermission, Jaya told the band that he loved Paint Me on Velvet and that it was "our song". Conrad was truely taken aback and horrified: what a sad and miserable song! Jaya told him that it is a beautiful waltz and besides, I never hear the words anyway;) Janet asked if they would be playing the song after the break and he said no, there are just too many tunes and they can't do them all.

But, before the third and final encore of the evening Conrad had this to say;

We'd like to thank the couple who requested this song. Please listen to the words, and reconsider using it at your wedding. ― Conrad Deisler

The First Dance is a waltz, "Paint Me On Velvet."

The rest of the evening will be good live dance music provided by the Janet Lenore Band that you might find in a nightclub catering to the over 30 crowd.
